legimancer→ character informationSeries: Death Note
Name: L Lawliet
Age: 25
Gender: ♂
Appearance: For his age and his time, L can be condensed into one word:
eccentric. Extending from his scalp comes thick hair of dark colors fit for a brunette, with a style almost comparable to a scraggly possum, overlapping the majority of his face. His eyes are pitch-black due to constant dilation, seated above shadowed curves that dwell just underneath. Accompanied by these aberrant features is his unusually pale complexion, that helps in denoting his reclusive lifestyle.
Aside from
just his physical features is an assortment of characteristic quirks that certainly define him. Always is he seen wearing casual and comfortable apparel, minus the footwear. Things he touches are always held with two fingers, as if the object actually disgusts him. Whenever 'seated', he normally carries himself with his feet in a crouched position, also going so far as to play with his feet during mid-conversation.
L stands at 179 cm, approximates difficult to notice at first glance due his slouched posture. He weights 110 lbs, being quite underweight for his age. He is clearly not the perfect bodybuilder, but his training in Capoiera constitutes a lean build and the strength to put up a fistfight with earthly folks.
Personality: Above all, L is a theoretical thinker that has an immense knack for solving problems. With a mind of his calibre, he can deliver exact and perceptive insight into a situation, perhaps even shedding some light to an entirely new concept. Possessing a curiosity like no other's, L's eternal quest for the absolute truth brings him to lasting conclusions that can break the shackles of an unsolvable case.
The
truth is a concept so important to L, that he can easily disregard everyone else's emotional welfare. He abstains from any delving into such views, so just to get even a glimpse of what he can rightfully perceive as "the truth" in a person. By discovering what makes them tick, he uses such knowledge to his advantage. Barely anything is seen at an emotional level from his perspective, unless it was somehow essential to the success of a case.
That brings things to the significance of his work as the World's Greatest Detective. Renown for his achievements could explain a stubborn arrogance L has deep down, preventing him from finding credibility in his own intuitions without complete rational structuring. Everything he lays his eyes on requires thorough analysis and clarity, so not to make a heaven-shattering mistake that could cripple whatever systematical approach he would always perform.
Like a child, L will do
whatever it takes to pull the strings, doing that
however way possible. Manipulation of everything and everyone he has at his company and disposal is key to L's occasionally unorthodox methods. He may coax a temporary subordinate into their own death to satisfy whatever doubts he has about his assumptions. Everything is carried out in a soft-spoken manner, as such a disposition comes natural to him. L is fixated towards his own goals, deep down, and will never refrain from stooping down to the criminal's level
just to catch them.As an archetypal genius, L can show a lack of common sense and distinctive array of quirks that set him apart from the general crowd. Never is he seen walking or standing without a characteristic curvature of the back. Always does he carry himself by the feet, often maintaining a crouching position that he claims increases his reasoning ability by 40%. When seated and situated at the appropriate environment, L is almost never seen without a variety of confections that he consumes at a daily basis. Such a diet is very unhealthy, but he claims to kill off the calories by the sole use of his brain.
L also delivers a very awkward and somewhat sad atmosphere, with his wide-eyed stares and disheveled appearance that leave the impression of himself being a careless dunce. While that's obviously not the contrary at this point, L prefers to keep it that way so to mask potential that can't afford
any publicity in person. His intellectual potency is revealed only durations later, so to surprise and prove the masses wrong.
Particulars: A brilliant mind • L possesses a gifted mind with a mastery and knowledge of justice, criminology, psychology, cryptography, and investigation in general. He can pinpoint even the smallest of details with great accuracy. He possesses photographic memory, and uses it to his advantage when analyzing information.
Mastery of Capoiera • Through moderate practice, L is very proficient in the martial art of Capoiera: an acrobatic combination of dance and combat. He is willing to put his knowledge of this art to good use, whenever a fist meets his face.
Experience in aeronautics • All this time, L has always known how to pilot a helicopter. This comes to an advantage at times of emergency, especially when a criminal crucial to the case must be physically pursued.
A cell phone • is always at L's disposal, in case he has to be contacted immediately.
Canon History: L is as fanciful as his own timeline. The legend himself was born on the 31st of October, 1979, someplace in Europe. He was lacking of any outlet for his genius during the first period of his life, right until he was discovered by inventor Quillsh Wammy at the age of 8. Shortly thereafter, L spent his days in Wammy's House: a sanctuary that fostered gifted children into very influential individuals. At the understanding of his intellectual gifts in Wammy's House, he was able to contribute to the assistance of local law enforcement. It was not surprising that his influence would spread far enough to render him a Great Detective.
Finally becoming the
World's Greatest, L proceeded to decipher the most mind-boggling cases to date. By that time, he had the entire world and Law Enforcement Organizations at his fingertips. All of it was able to be accomplished with the help of Quillsh Wammy, or "Watari," who would provide L's 'presence' before groups like the ICPO, instead of L himself arriving in person. His true identity and Watari's therefore remained anonymous.
As the Kira Case conspired: an issue that involved a 'supernatural' string of murders amongst many criminals, such precautions proved to be a valuable asset. Like the Great Detective he was, he discovered Kira's location with pinpoint accuracy. With the help of Japan's National Task Force, he was able to come across a certain Light Yagami, who to L appeared to suspicious for words. To clarify his suspicions, he approaches Light when they encounter at his own college and
reveals his identity as L. This stirs a rising conflict between the two jaded geniuses, that forever lasts. What adds to the struggle is the presence of a Second Kira: Misa Amane, Light's girlfriend. She was apprehended and interrogated in pursuit of evidence that she was the Second Kira, as Light turned himself in as well, for reasons he states could make him the First Kira. Killings ceased during their time confined, but began again after two weeks thanks to a
Third Kira. Light and Misa had to be released, to L's subtle dismay, but were still closely monitored out of his own paranoia. A new headquarters was established for the three, the entire Task Force, and Watari in order to track down Kira.
Months of collaborative investigation followed. Bits and pieces of the Kira puzzle were starting to come together in L's head, as Kyosuke Higuchi of the Yotsuba Group turned out to be the Third Kira. Knowledge of the Death Note was made known at the introduction of the shinigami Rem, L obtaining a copy of the notebook for personal study. Higuchi was later chased by police forces all the way to a dead end, but died of a heart attack before future interrogation. Having followed Higuchi with Light by helicopter, L was able to arrive at the scene of Higuchi's death in person.
→ deviationsCrux: Light's memory was
not restored, rendered with no idea of coaxing Misa to coax Rem to kill L. After testing the supposed 13-day rule of the Death Note, L's victory was assured.
Tangent: When Light asked L to hand him the notebook for inspection, L nonchalantly refused, so to satisfy his own curiosity concerning the 'spontaneous' heart attack that Higuchi had suffered. Light, being as innocent as he was without memories of the Death Note, respected L's judgement and let him inspect the notebook for himself. Events that happened in canon such as the securing of the third Death Note and the discovery of the Third Kira's identity came to pass; earlier suspects were released and Light still volunteered to work with L.
L still suspected Light and Misa of the being the First and Second Kiras, realizing that the only way to prove that was to test the Death Note and one of it's alleged rules. Because Light had no memory of using the notebook, he never coaxed Misa to half her lifespan (with Ryuk) and restore
her memories of the notebook, thus manipulating Rem into killing L for Misa's safety. L was therefore
safe, and carried out his plans to test the 13-day rule as stated in the notebook. The rule was proven to be
false. L was then able to deduce the identity of the two remaining Kiras, convicting Light and Misa of their crimes. Rem was unable to kill L without the right influence from Light, but it was then ultimately L's victory. His two 'friends' were forced to a life sentence.
As the Kira Case was cracked, the worldwide trauma that began simmered down. L solved yet another impossible mystery, which had pit his wits against the supernatural.
Weeks passed. Other, more mundane murders were solved. A sense of normality in the world was restored. The entire time, L laid secluded in his own private residence; the hotel-hopping days of the Kira Case were all but a faded memory. But the criminal underworld's interest in L's identity wasn't, as he always proved to be a capable threat. Cryptographer spies were hired to closely keep watch of Watari, and discovered L's true location after several months of laborious research. The knowledge of these spies inevitably
did not escape L's sight. Foreseeing disastrous possibilities, L prepared to situate elsewhere in the nick of time. Hotel-hopping days had begun again.
L continued solving cases despite a constant change of location. At some point, he even boarded a private boat (with foods that matched his diet) across the Atlantic to further increase the workload of the spies (Watari elsewhere as L's agent). Ill luck had struck for the detective, as a Northern Atlantic Hurricane had brewed just several miles away. It immensely carried his boat off course, and into a location unknown. It was troubling, but deciphering the unknown was an objective L devoted his life to. He would do the same for whatever he finds at the end of the storm.
Allegiance: Virtuoso
Reason: As much as L's methods occasionally involve deceit, he would not want that fact to be blatantly obvious. So he may instead join a faction that promotes his most prominent trait: intelligence. Access to the great library would also prove essential if he needed information to deduce
solely concerning Soeldei.

A veil of darkness encompassed one hollow abode, firmly penetrated by an artificial, ultramarine glow. Silent signals of numerous devices subtly echoed across the space, occupying what little sound had manifested within those walls. Before the central computer (that had indelicately lit the room) sat Detective L. At the stroke of a key and the click of a mouse, he consulted agent-after-agent, conducted conclusive research, and stimulated his mental workings so as to solve a specific case. It was not a matter of multitasking, as he performed each action in systematic order, as if solving a puzzle.
Such methods were only half of L's objective. As there was an uncertainty to his permanent headquarters at the time, he found temporary residence somewhere in Stolin, Belarus. It was to his advantage that he resided there, as the case he was solving involved a murder that transpired just nearby. The very apartment complex he stayed in was filled with indefinite suspects, and simply meeting them could give him answers on a silver platter. He had all the information he needed for their identities, but their roles in the case weren't anywhere to be found in his documents. There were obvious cons to the notion L had immediately acknowledged.
Nonetheless, Watari's absence (on a flight to the ICPO addressing matters of
another case) was a potential factor to L sleuthing around on foot. "Let justice be done, though the sky may fall," he whispered to himself, contemplating just what to do next. Local law enforcement was already on the job, but it would be hours before they approached the building L occupied. He sipped some tea at the idea, vacuously staring into what's left of the cup as he gazed at his own reflection. "So not to tarnish the impression of myself as a 'computer detective', I will contrive an I.D. of a foreign investigator I supposedly hired. To police forces, it will not be
L who does the footwork, but
'Ninnian Jeane'." Such was the voice of L's thoughts, that were spoken by his reflection as he imagined. Taking the law into one's hands is what a Great Detective breathes, and L expressed this rationale as he silently exited the room.
A vivid sunlight pierced L's vision, the universal gleam something he gradually adjusted to. The light itself revealed L clad in his casual attire despite a snowy morning; he even wore shoes, as he couldn't afford frostbite for his feet. His suite was located upstairs, but starting downstairs was somehow an easy choice,
as he always works his way up when solving a case. For about an hour, L bluntly approached his temporary neighbors and asked them many trivial questions that provided hints to determine their respective places in the crime scene. Things like "What is the meaning of your full name?," or, "How would you interpret the credibility of the Bible?," were tossed around non-stop. L had the analysis to pick things apart, and the wisdom to put them together.
Hearing of 'Ninnian Jeane' from a phone conversation with a person L already visited, an unassuming Renae Corri immediately closed the lights within her suite. She was a witness of the murder, but had obsessive fears of conviction over a traumatic experience during her childhood (involving her father's association with organized crime). She had kept her mouth shut all this time. How her personal history had affected her was not of L's knowledge, but a mere theory, as he paced up the staircase to the second floor. With the information he had, the neighbors below were evicted of suspicion. A process of elimination led him back to where he physically began just an hour ago.
Snowflakes fell; L ceased in his tracks to immerse into this precipitation. A whole quantity of water suddenly showered on the detective, so sudden that it paralyzed him and left his eyes wander aimlessly for the culprit of this infraction. His teeth subtly chattered, as he noticed a figure immediately shutting her window. This cold bath was an obvious message saying, "GET OUT."
This was obviously not a premeditated attempt. But I at least have a clue concerning someone who has made it clear that they know something, L figured. A stunt as obnoxious as that would not hinder his progress.
Memorizing the suite number, L casually knocked on this new suspect's door. He may have been wet, but he assured in the beginning that his case came before his welfare.
"Ninnian Jeane--FBI. Please answer some questions in need of asking."
